FAQ
Honest answers to the questions I hear most often about web design, development, and pricing. If yours isn't here, just ask.
General Questions
How much does a custom website cost?
Most custom websites fall between $5,000 and $15,000 depending on scope. Landing pages and smaller projects cost less; larger sites with ecommerce, integrations, or lots of custom functionality cost more. Every project gets a clear breakdown of what's included before any work starts.
How long does a website project take?
A typical marketing or business website takes 4 to 8 weeks from discovery to launch. A landing page can be faster, and a larger redesign or ecommerce build can take longer. You'll get a realistic timeline before we start.
Who owns the website design and code when the project is finished?
You do. Once the final payment is made, the design, code, and content are yours, and the site runs on hosting you control. You're never locked in to a single provider or platform.
Do I need to provide the content and images?
Most clients bring their own copy, photos, and brand assets, but I can help shape structure and messaging. If you need copywriting, photography, or a brand identity, that can be added as separate scope.
Can my team edit the website after it launches?
Yes. Sites are built on a content management system (CMS) your team can use directly, so you can update pages, posts, and images without needing a developer for every change.
What happens after the website launches?
Launch is the start, not the finish. I offer ongoing support and maintenance retainers for updates, new pages, and iterative improvements, and I'm available to review performance and analytics as your site grows.
Brand Identity FAQs
How long does a brand identity project take?
Most identity projects take 3 to 6 weeks depending on scope, logo and guidelines for a new brand, or a refresh of an existing one. You'll get a timeline before we begin.
What do you need from me to start?
Little more than your time for a discovery conversation. I'll guide the process and ask the questions that matter. You don't need to be a design expert.
Do you design websites too, and will the brand work on my site?
Yes. I design and build websites, so the identity is created with your website in mind and applies seamlessly to it.
What files will I receive?
You'll receive all logo formats (SVG, EPS, PNG, and more), brand guidelines, and the working files, so you're never locked in or waiting on a favor.
Can you refresh an existing brand without starting over?
Yes. If you have equity in your current brand, a refresh can modernize the look while keeping what customers already recognize.
CMS & Website Platforms FAQs
Should I use WordPress or Shopify?
It depends on the site. WordPress is a strong fit for content-heavy sites, blogs, and marketing websites. Shopify is built for selling products with reliable checkout and inventory. We'll match the platform to your goals in the discovery phase.
Can you build a site that's not a template?
Yes. Templates are a starting point at best. I build custom themes so the site reflects your brand and doesn't look like every other WordPress or Shopify site.
Will I be able to update the website myself?
That's the point. The content structure is designed so your team can update pages, publish posts, and manage products without writing code or contacting a developer.
Can you migrate my existing website to a CMS?
Yes. I can move your current site to WordPress or Shopify, preserve your URLs and rankings where possible, and set up the new editing experience.
Do you handle hosting and maintenance?
I can set up recommended hosting and provide ongoing maintenance including updates, backups, and security checks.
Digital Marketing Design FAQs
What makes marketing design different from general web design?
Marketing design is measured by conversion. It starts with a message and a goal, and every visual decision supports getting the viewer to act. General web design is more focused on usability and information structure.
Do you design ads for specific platforms?
Yes. I design for the exact specs of platforms like Google, Meta, and LinkedIn, and I can repurpose one campaign into all the sizes each channel needs.
Can you design my landing pages and connect them to my campaigns?
Yes. I can design and build the landing page, and set it up to work with your ad platform and analytics so you can measure performance.
Will my marketing materials stay on-brand?
Yes. Campaign creative follows your brand identity, or, if you don't have full guidelines yet, I can work with what you have and keep everything consistent.
Do you write the copy too?
I develop messaging frameworks and can write headlines and landing page copy as part of the design work. For large copywriting needs, I'll collaborate with you or your writer.
Front-End Development FAQs
What's the difference between front-end development and web design?
Web design is the visual and UX layer, layout, typography, and how the site feels. Front-end development turns that design into working code in the browser. I do both, which means no detail is lost in translation.
Which technologies do you use?
I build with semantic HTML, CSS/Sass, and JavaScript. For content-heavy or component-driven sites I use React with Gatsby or Next.js, and I integrate with CMS platforms like WordPress and Shopify.
Can you work with my existing developers or team?
Yes. The code is written to be maintainable and follows common conventions, so it fits into an existing codebase or a team workflow without friction.
Will the site be fast?
Performance is a core part of how I build. Image optimization, minimal dependencies, and efficient CSS and JavaScript keep load times fast on mobile and desktop connections.
Do you provide ongoing maintenance?
Yes. I can support the site after launch with updates, new features, and performance improvements on a schedule that fits your needs.
Performance & Accessibility FAQs
What are Core Web Vitals and why do they matter?
Core Web Vitals are Google's measurements of loading speed, interactivity, and visual stability, LCP, INP, and CLS. They're part of Google's page experience ranking signals, and they directly affect how visitors experience your site.
How much faster can my website get?
Most sites have quick wins that cut load time meaningfully, often 30% or more in initial improvements. The total depends on your site's current state, hosting, and content, and we measure before and after to show real numbers.
What does web accessibility involve?
Making your site usable by people with disabilities, including keyboard-only users and screen reader users. This means semantic HTML, proper heading structure, text alternatives, sufficient contrast, and more, typically following the WCAG guidelines.
Is accessibility required by law?
In many cases yes. Accessibility regulations and ADA-related lawsuits are increasingly common for businesses. Beyond compliance, accessible sites reach more people and rank better.
Do you work on sites you didn't build?
Yes. I can audit and optimize sites built by anyone, identify the fixes, and either implement them or guide your team through them.
Web Design FAQs
How long does a custom website design take?
A typical marketing or business website takes 4 to 8 weeks from discovery to launch, depending on scope. A landing page or smaller project can be faster, and larger redesigns can take longer. You'll get a timeline before we start.
Do you build the website after the design is approved?
Yes. I'm both a designer and a developer, so the same person who designs the site builds it. That removes handoff friction and keeps the final result faithful to the design.
Will my website work on mobile devices?
Every website I design is responsive. The layout adapts to phones, tablets, and desktops, and mobile is treated as a first-class experience rather than an afterthought.
Can you redesign my existing website?
Absolutely. I can audit your current site, identify what's hurting conversion and usability, and redesign it while keeping what's working, including preserving your SEO equity where it matters.
Do you work with clients outside of Columbus, Ohio?
Yes. I work with clients across the country. Discovery, design reviews, and feedback all happen remotely with a simple, collaborative process.
